Reducing the dangers of road salt pollution: Speakers, experts, de-icing demonstration January 31, Gaithersburg, Md.
Media Advisory for January 31, 2026
Be aware of road salt pollution and reduce its dangers
Sidewalk salting demonstration, water testing and photo opportunities about keeping waterways clean
GAITHERSBURG, Md. —– The public and media are invited to attend an in-person event on January 31 to learn how to protect public health and the environment from the hazards of road salt. Salt keeps our roads and sidewalks safe during icy weather but using more than needed comes at a cost for our waterways, infrastructure and drinking water. Winter salt runs off the roads and becomes a permanent pollutant in our waterways. Only one teaspoon of salt permanently pollutes five gallons of water. (Visit www.saltwatch.org).
The event at the Izaak Walton League’s national headquarters in Gaithersburg will include expert speakers, live testing of a local waterway for salt pollution using Salt Watch kits, a sidewalk salting demonstration, and opportunities to connect with local organizations tabling during the event. The League encourages attendees to bring a water sample (from your drinking water or a local waterway) in a sealed container to test it for salt pollution.
Speakers include Watershed Restoration Planning Division Chief of Maryland Department of the Environment Greg Sandi; Montgomery County Water Restoration Division Chief Amy Stevens; and General Manager/CEO of WSSC Water Kishia Powell.
