Girl Scouts of the USA announced a new “Think Like a Citizen Scientist” journey to 1.9 million Girl Scouts this summer as part of a collaboration with SciStarter, an international portal to citizen science projects. The Izaak Walton League is a SciStarter affiliate. We are using this platform for our Stream Selfie project, which was selected as one of seven citizen science projects promoted to Girl Scouts.

Stream Selfie was selected because it exemplifies the ways citizen science can engage people of all ages to advance scientific research. Our project uses clear protocols and simple tools, making it accessible to Girl Scouts and leaders across the country.

Every Girl Scout who contributes to the Stream Selfie project is encouraged to take follow-up steps to improve water quality in her community, including by organizing stream clean-ups and volunteer stream monitoring teams. This makes Stream Selfie a great entry point to engage Girl Scouts in clean water efforts.
