New York Times profiles youth-led Green Crew program created by Izaak Walton League in Minnesota
On May 20, the New York Times featured the work of the Green Crew, which is a youth-led program created by an Izaak Walton League chapter in Minnesota. The Times featured the Crew in their ongoing series about local efforts to tackle climate change, called “50 States, 50 Fixes.”
The headline in the newspaper reads “Minnesota Teens Are Fighting Climate Anxiety With Shovels.” Green Crew members plant trees in urban areas, restore natural areas and monitor water quality, among other projects.
The Times reports that the “Crew’s ambitions are growing beyond its home base. The group is in the process of starting three other chapters in the state and has received about two dozen inquiries from people across the country interested in replicating its model.”

One Crew member, Griffith Pugh, launched a podcast earlier this year called “The Young Ike,” which in his words, is designed to spark curiosity, lean into uncomfortable tensions around environmental issues and bring conversations “off the earbuds and into the real world.”
