‘Help protect our waters by reducing winter salt use’
This article from APG Media of Wisconsin gives a shout out to Winter Salt Week 2026 and discusses how winter road salt poses a growing threat to Wisconsin’s freshwater ecosystems, with annual chloride levels in state rivers nearing 800,000 tons. The use of salt contributes to permanent water pollution, infrastructure damage, and elevated sodium levels in community wells, but residents can adopt practices like early shoveling and using sand in extreme cold to help mitigate these issues.


Your kit will include a bottle containing 25 nitrate test strips which you can use to test your water source(s) throughout the year. You’ll also receive postcards explaining how to use your nitrate test strips and how to share your Nitrate Watch results on the Clean Water Hub.
