Shooting Sports in America

From Recreation to Olympic-Level Competition

Tens of millions of Americans enjoy shooting sports – from shooting paper targets with a .22 rifle in the backyard or trap and skeet at an Izaak Walton League chapter to participating in competitive events that can lead to Olympic gold medals.

The Izaak Walton League has been a leader on shooting sports for 100 years. Beginning in the 1930s, for example, League Chapters expanded trap and skeet ranges and competition to help waterfowl hunters improve accuracy and reduce the number of wounded ducks and geese. Today, many League chapters with firearms and archery ranges are hubs for shooting sports in their communities.

Shooting Sports Enthusiasts Fund Conservation

Federal taxes paid on firearms and ammunition used primarily for shooting sports now provide the largest share of revenue for wildlife management, habitat conservation and expanded access to public lands for all types of outdoor recreation nationwide. Taxes paid by shooting sports enthusiasts provide conservation outcomes and outdoor recreation opportunities that benefit every American.

Get Started at an Izaak Walton League Chapter

Nearly 120 League chapters with firearms and archery ranges are hubs for shooting sports in local communities. Getting the proper introduction to the shooting sports is important. Many chapters offer opportunities for beginners to safely learn the sports, support a wide array of youth shooting sports and provide firearms safety training for people of all ages.

Although shooting sports resources vary by chapter, chapters have ranges for trap, skeet, sporting clays, rifle, pistol, air gun, and field and target archery, some have indoor ranges, and many of these chapters support competitive shooting sports across the spectrum from beginner to expert. If you or your family join one of these chapters as members, you will have access to chapter facilities year-round.

Contributions to Conservation

Firearms owners and shooting sports participants also help fund critical conservation efforts that simply could not be accomplished without the taxes they pay. Learn more about this support in the League’s Outdoor America magazine.
