Iowa >> The West Central Chapter embarked on a new project last year. The goal was simple: engage area youth (grades 5 through 12) in outdoor activities while introducing them to conservation issues.
Youth members at the chapter could participate in shooting sports, but until now there were no conservation-focused activities for them.
The first event was a trip to Gavins Point Dam on the Missouri River near Yankton, South Dakota. “We were allowed to enter the dam and observe the turbines and see hydroelectric power first hand,” says chapter media outreach chair Jack Johnson, who was one of the chaperones on the trip. “We then went to the adjoining fish hatchery and aquarium. The ranger discussed with the group the role of protecting endangered species and the problems the river is experiencing with invasive species. The kids were allowed to see (and touch) many of the species that were discussed.” It was a great opportunity for youth to experience the many benefits the Missouri River provides the community — and understand the threats to the future of the river and how they can help keep the river healthy.
A fall canoeing expedition was postponed due to high water, but chapter leaders will reschedule it as one of four field trips they are planning for this new Junior Ikes program in 2019.
