Walter J. Breckenridge

Founded in 1932 the North Minneapolis Chapter’s first significant undertaking was halting a drainage project along the Mississippi. Four years later a crew largely of volunteers built the Chapter House using stones collected from each of the 48 states in the Union at that time for the massive fireplace. In 1996 the Chapter was renamed the ‘Walter J. Breckenridge Chapter’ after a longtime member and Director of the Bell Museum of Natural History. Upon his retirement in 1969 Northern States Power donated the island behind the Chapter House to the University of Minnesota. The Chapter purchased it for $100 and now preserves it in its natural state along with the four acres on which the Chapter House stands. The Breckenridge Chapter strongly supports environmental education and has sponsored more than $24,000 in college scholarships for 48 Minnesota students with a strong interest in, and a commitment to, environmental causes. We partner with the National Park Service’s Mississippi National River and Recreation Area and also sponsor Boy Scout Troop 332. We welcome the public to our social/educational meetings on the third Tuesday of each month. Note: Island is actually 21 acres!
