The Bill Cook Chapter dates back to 1902, when a group of sportsmen concerned with threats to their local environment formed the Portage County Fish & Game Protective Association. In 1923, the group joined the Izaak Walton League of America, just one year after the formation of that national conservation organization. Our chapter remains very active today, with a membership of over 300. Dedicated to hands-on conservation and educational projects, current activities include scholarships, school book buy, conservation advocacy, stream improvement, youth educational programs, hunter education, highway cleanup, river cleanup, bow shoots, and family conservation day. The chapter’s property is also frequently used by university groups, scouts, and others for educational and conservation activities. The chapter grounds and Conservation Center are located east of the Stevens Point Airport off Highway 66. The grounds are open to members and consist of about 147 acres of managed forest, with the scenic Plover River passing through it. It also includes rifle, pistol, trap, and bow ranges for members’ use. Our recently completed Conservation Center provides space for education, meetings, and special events. The Bill Cook Chapter meets 7:00 PM the first Wednesday of every month in the Conservation Center. Guests are welcome at our meetings. Just watch for the sign on Highway 66.
Your kit will include a bottle containing 25 nitrate test strips which you can use to test your water source(s) throughout the year. You’ll also receive postcards explaining how to use your nitrate test strips and how to share your Nitrate Watch results on the Clean Water Hub.
