Fish & Wildlife

All Americans benefit from healthy and accessible fish and wildlife populations. The League was founded by 54 sportsmen that wanted to pass abundant opportunities to hunt, fish, and enjoy nature to future generations. We still have work to do to secure a better future for America’s fish and wildlife. Threats like habitat loss, climate change, habitat degradation and fragmentation, disease, pollution, and invasive species threaten hard earned recoveries of America’s fish and wildlife populations and require innovative solutions to increasingly complex problems.

For nearly a century, funding for the conservation and restoration of our country’s wildlife has come from the sale of hunting and fishing licenses, as well as excise taxes on sporting goods, primarily firearms, ammunition, and fishing tackle. However, in the face of a growing population, that demands ever more resources and urbanization of America leading to shrinking participation in hunting, the League recognizes that new funding sources for fish and wildlife conservation are needed.

Combating Habitat Loss

Habitat loss is the biggest driver of declining biodiversity and wildlife losses. Across the country, iconic landscapes are being lost, and the fish and wildlife that depend on them are fading as well.

The League is working to protect America’s fish and wildlife by conserving and restoring the places they call home, from the prairies of the Great Plains to the working lands of America’s farms and ranches to the floodplains of our great rivers.
