SUMMARY:Walk in the Woods: Let's be Smart About Winter Salt - NW Branch Anacostia
DESCRIPTION:Step into the shoes of an environmental detective as we explore the hidden impacts of oversalting our streets and sidewalks during the winter season. Discover how excess salt harms delicate aquatic creatures\, disrupts the fragile balance of our ecosystems\, and pollutes our drinking water\, and learn from the experts about what we can all do to be “winter salt smart.” \nThe walk will also highlight the life and teachings of Silver Spring resident and writer/biologist Rachel Carson (1907-1964)\, with staff from Springsong Museum on hand to provide rich historical information and examples of Carson’s influential writings. Currently in development\, Springsong Museum will transform the vacant building at Burnt Mills East Park into a community museum that connects the public and nature through the wonder and wisdom of Rachel Carson. \nJoin the Izaak Walton League of America on this fun and informative hike to learn about our addiction to deicing salt and how we can all live on a low winter salt diet. Together\, we can make a significant difference and create a cleaner\, healthier future. \nExpect to walk a one mile loop on a dirt trail with a bit of rock scrambling at the end. Please bring your own water bottle. \nThis event is FREE but please register on Eventbrite in case of delays or rescheduling due to bad weather. The rain date is Sunday\, November 8. \nIzaak Walton League will be providing a Salt Watch kit to anyone interested in getting involved. \nEach participant will be required to complete the following form. Copies will be available at the beginning of the hike or you can bring your own printed\, signed copy: https://www.potomacriver.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Liability-Waiver-and-Medical-Form_2020.pdf \nThis hike is produced by the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB) in collaboration with the Izaak Walton League of America. It is part of ICPRB’s Walk in the Woods series of hikes.

SUMMARY:Salt Watch Kickoff: Local and State Smart Salting Policy Ideas
DESCRIPTION:Kickoff the winter season with Salt Watch as we explore actionable strategies and policy updates for protecting our local watersheds from chloride pollution. \nAs winter approaches\, balancing public safety with environmental health becomes a critical challenge. Excess road salt permanently pollutes our lakes\, streams\, and groundwater\, but smart management practices can make a massive difference. \nIn this kickoff webinar\, we are excited to welcome Jessica Vanderwerff Wilson from the City of Edina\, Minnesota. Jessica will share how local communities can leverage Minnesota’s robust suite of smart salting resources to reduce salt use without sacrificing safety. She will also provide an inside look at the implementation and impact of the winter maintenance licensure ordinance—a powerful regulatory tool driving accountability and best practices in property management. \nWhether you are a seasoned Salt Watch volunteer\, a municipal leader\, a watershed advocate\, or a curious resident\, this webinar will equip you with the knowledge and tools needed to champion clean water this winter. \nRegister today to secure your spot!
