Clean Water Workshops

Save Our Streams Training

Want to become a certified Save Our Streams monitor? The certification process begins at home! You will start by watching introductory training webinars. Then you will receive the link to take a macroinvertebrate identification test.

Once you have passed the macroinvertebrate identification exam, you will be ready to attend a field training. In the field, we will review the monitoring protocol and give you an opportunity to practice on your own. After the training, you will take a protocol exam. Once you pass, you will be an official certified stream monitor!

In-Person Trainings

Field Day Trainings Coming Soon – Stay Tuned!

SOS staff and volunteer trainers are working to provide safe and effective field trainings this season. At this time, we will only be able to offer field days in states and regions with active staff and volunteer trainer presence. As such, we expect field days to be offered in the Mid-Atlantic and the Midwest.

Find a Trainer Near You

We have several volunteer trainers who are eager to help you get certified! Once you’re ready for your field training, check out our list of trainers and reach out to one in your area. If you need help connecting with a trainer, contact our staff.

Upcoming Trainings

SOS staff offer workshops in the spring and fall. Right now, we're planning for the upcoming season. If you don't see a scheduled event near you, reach out to a local volunteer trainer. Check back soon for more training opportunities!

About the Field Training

Save Our Streams field trainings offer hands-on experience in water quality monitoring, including biological, chemical, and physical stream assessments. Participants also learn to assess stream habitat and watershed land uses. You'll leave your field training fully equipped to assess water quality – and take steps to fix it!
